Natasha

The following is a log Natasha's mother has used to track her daughter's initial progress after starting HBOT Note the reduction in seizures and improvement in seizure recovery.

Behavioral Journal for Natasha

Monday—April 26 ,2004

Natasha started hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). She went in between 4:10 and 5 00. She stayed in for 1 hour. We noticed that after we got home, she laughed for about i hours. She is usually not that hyper.

Tuesday—April 27, 2004

Natasha started her day with a 2 minute seizure. Normally they last 20 minutes.  After getting home from school, she was in the cham ber for 1 hour, from 2 4. She went to sleep about 7p.m. and slept till 6.45 a.m. She usually goes to bed between 9-10 p.m.

Wednesday—April 28.2004

Natasha had a seizure that lasted 1J minutes on the bus this morn ing. In the afternoon, she played all the way home. She was in the chamber at 3.30 for s 1 hour period. She went to bed at 9p.m.

Thursday—April 29, 2004

Natasha woke up very happy and alert.   Did not have a seizure,

thank the Lord. She went in the chamber for I hour at 1:50 p.m.

Her feet were not cold. They are usually cold and purple. That evening, her dad pointed out that she was opening her right hand more. Also, she responded several times when we said her name by turning in our direction and smiling. She was more alert and laughing.

Friday—April 31, 2004

Natasha had an 8 minute seizure this morning. Not as tired as usual when she came out of it. She laughed and was happy all the way home from school.

We went into the chamber at 5:50 p.m. and stayed for an hour and 20 minutes. While we were in the chamber, she wrapped her right hand around my finger. She usually can't hold anything in her right hand, hut she was gripping my finger.

Her dad noticed she did not snore Wednesday or Thursday night. She went to steep around 10 p.m.

Saturday—May 1, 2004

Natasha woke up again with NO SEIZURE. She did not snore Friday night. We went into the chamber this morning about 10:45 a.m. and stayed in about 2 hours

When Natasha woke up, only her big toe was a little cold She was a bit fussier today and working her right hand. She was a lot fussier later on... not crying, hut just very restless. She did not go to sleep until midnight or shortly after.

Sunday—May 2, 2004       ""'

Natasha woke up with no seizure again She had a good day. I didn't really notice anything else different today. She went to sleep around 9:50 or 10.00 p.m

Monday— May 3, 200)

Natasha woke up this morning alert and smiling, but went into a seizure that lasted 5 minutes. But this seizure was different because she is usually not alert during her   seizures.      She went into another seizure about 25 minutes later that lasted 13 minutes. She was still very alert and responding during her seizure. When she came out of it, she was smiling and playing. She never went to sleep (after the seizure). This is very unusual because:

1)     She is never responsive to me when she is having a seizure.

2)    She never has a seizure that is separated by time. They are

      always at the same time.

3)     She did not go to sleep after these seizures.

4)     She ate right when she got to school, which she never does.

Tuesdav— Mav 4, 2004

Natasha had a seizure that lasted about 5 minutes. She remained alert — smiling and playing. She went to see Dr. Bruce today and she had gained weight, from 21 lbs 8 oz. to 21 lbs 4 oz.  in 2 months, and grown 1 inch in length.

WednesdayMay 5, 2004

Natasha had a seizure this morning, which began about 2 hours after she woke up, and it only lasted 1 minute. Then, 15 minutes later, she had 2 successive seizures, separated by a 15 minute interval.  During all these, she remained very alert. The rest of the day, she had a good day.

Thursday— May 6, 2004

Natasha had a seizure that was 20 minutes long. She did not go to sleep right after, but remained alert and ate. She is still gripping with her hand.

Friday— May 7, 2004

Natasha did not have a seizure in the morning. She was very alert and listening very well. We were in the chamber from 5 45 p.m. to 5 p.m. About 45 minutes later, she went into a seizure that lasted 6 minutes.

When the seizure was over, she was not quite alert, but not sleep either. This continued about 45 minutes, and then she began to smile again. She remained alert until she went to steep about 2:10 a.m.

Saturday— May 8, 2004

Natasha woke up this morning laughing at the birds whistling and started looking at me for a long time. She was looking at my face for probably 10 minutes. She doesn't usually look at the same thing for more than a minute. She has had no seizure today.

Sunday— May 9, 2004

Natasha woke up about 9:10 a.m. She had a seizure for about 4 minutes, but was very alert and happy afterward. I have noticed her being more restless before going to sleep. She was happy all day

Monday—May 10,2004

She did not have a seizure this morning. Woke up smiling. Was in the chamber for an hour, from 5:1O to 4:10 p.m. She went to sleep about 11 p.m.

Tuesday—May 11, 2004

Natasha   woke   up   an hour earlier this morning.   She had about a 9

minute seizure.   She has been happier and more alert. Was in the chamber for an hour, from 4 to 5 p.m. Went to sleep at  11  p.m.

Wednesday—May 12, 2004

When Natasha woke up, she had a 6 minute seizure.  She continues

to be alert and respond well. Since she came home, she has been smiling.

Her right hand stays open almost all the time now. She is reaching more with both hands now.

Thursday—May 13, 2004

Natasha woke up around 6:00 a.m. and did not have a seizure. She was laughing and smiling. Went into the chamber from 3:45 to 5:05 p.m. She ate and drank around 7 p.m. Laughed and played and finally went to sleep around 11:30 p.m.

Friday—May 14, 2004

Natasha woke up at 6 45 a.m. She was alert and smiling. She did mil have a seizure this morning She has continued to be very alert and listens. Went into the chamber for about an hour and 20 minutes. She went to bed around midnight.

Saturday—May 15, 2004           -

Woke up at 9 a.m. NO SEIZURE. She has been very responsive all day. Went to sleep about 12:30 a.m.

Sunday—May 16, 2001                 -    -

Natasha woke up at 9:0O a.m. smiling and playful. NO SEIZURE this morning! She went into a seizure that lasted about 15 minute around 2 p.m. This is abnormal for her, as her seizures usually occur after she wakes up, for 15 minutes.

She turned real red around her nose and under her eyes. Her ears were also very red. This redness went away after the seizure stopped.

We noticed her pull herself completely up into a sitting position from laying down. She did not have to prop on either hand to remain sitting. She has never done this before without having to prop. She started slapping her legs with both hands after she sat up. She did this about 4 times. She got sick later on and started vomiting, but she was OK later on.

Monday—May 17, 2004

Natasha woke up and went into 3 one minute seizures within a ten minute period. She was fine afterward. We have noticed that she is concentrating a lot more. She is still looking at people and things for longer periods of time.

May 18-21: Chamber treatment 5:30-4:3O p.m. daily; first two days no seizures One five minute seizure on the 20th. One 8 minute seizure on the 21st.

Conclusion:

May 22. NO SEIZURES

May 23: One 8 minute seizure.

May 24; One 5 minute seizure.

And this is only a log of 29 DAYS! During those 29 days, Natasha's seizure activity has decreased significantly. She continues to take treatment, and currently (July 2004) has gone for 14 days out of the last 19 without seizures! Also, the few seizures Natasha does have do not wipe her out—she stays very alert and aware.

There are many other things that I have noticed in the last few days. Natasha has taken 6 steps with her right foot. Now she has better balance and stands any where from 18 to 10 seconds.

She is watching TV now, and can sit Indian style. Before, we would have to

manipulate her back just to get some flexibility. Natasha    continues    to make sounds, to vocalize. She laughs almost all the time.

Finally, I have noticed a change in Natasha's kidney and bowel function.  Before starting hypcrbarics, Natasha would soil 1-3 dia pers a day, not being very regular at all. With the hyperbaric treatments, her body is processing food through the kidneys and the bowel more efficiently. She's up to 4 diapers a day.

For us, Natasha's progress is a Godsend. Natasha's daily recovery reminds us that even the call for more diaper changes can be a miracle in disguise.
